  • Generac vs. Cummins: Which Home Generator Brand Wins?
September 18, 2025

Choosing the right generator for your home or business is a decision you live with for 15 to 20 years, so the brand comparison matters. Two of the biggest names in the space - Generac and Cummins - take different routes to the same goal. Here is how they actually stack up across the things that matter, based on our experience installing generators across Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia.

Company Backgrounds

Generac

Founded in 1959, Generac built its name around residential and light-commercial standby power. Every Generac engine is designed specifically for generator duty - no adapted automotive blocks, no off-the-shelf industrial engines repurposed.

Cummins

Cummins has been in the engine business since 1919 and carries a century-plus reputation for heavy-duty diesel engineering. Their generator line draws on that industrial DNA and tends to sit at a higher price point.

Product Range

Generac

Generac offers one of the broadest lineups in standby power - whole-home residential units, commercial-grade systems, portable units, and inverter models. For most single-family homes, the Guardian series is the sweet spot.

Cummins

Cummins covers residential and commercial too, with a strong lean into diesel and larger kilowatt classes. Their smaller residential units are capable but less common in typical Northeast Florida installs.

Key Features

Generac

  • Automatic Transfer Switch with seamless changeover.
  • Self-Test Mode that runs a weekly health check automatically.
  • Mobile Link for remote monitoring and alerts.
  • OHVI engine built specifically for generator use.
  • True Power Technology delivering less than 5 percent harmonic distortion.
  • Dual-fuel capability on natural gas and propane.
  • Quiet-Test mode for neighbor-friendly weekly exercises.
  • Aluminum or galvanized steel enclosures engineered for coastal exposure.

Cummins

  • PowerCommand control for integrated monitoring.
  • Multi-fuel on natural gas, propane, or diesel depending on the model.
  • Heavy-duty engine optimized for long service life.
  • Low-emissions tuning to meet current standards.
  • Sound-attenuated enclosures for noise control.
  • Cummins Connect cloud platform and mobile app.
  • Weather-resistant components built for outdoor duty.

Installation and Maintenance

Generac installs are well-documented and the parts ecosystem is deep - which matters when you need a replacement board on a Friday afternoon in September. Cummins installs are equally capable but often require a specialized service network for parts and routine work.

Either way, the basic sequence is the same: site assessment, pad, gas connection, electrical tie-in through the ATS, and commissioning. Annual maintenance is non-negotiable on either brand - oil, filters, battery, connections, and a load test.

Warranty and Support

Both brands ship with multi-year parts-and-labor coverage. Generac has the larger dealer network in residential standby, which usually translates to faster response on service calls. Cummins offers strong coverage but is oriented more toward commercial and industrial support.

Cost

Generac residential units typically land in the $2,000 to $5,000 range (unit only, before installation), with commercial-grade models going higher. Cummins tends to price 20 to 40 percent above comparable Generac units, reflecting the heavier engineering and industrial heritage.

The GenCo Generators Take

For most Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia homes, Generac is the better fit. It is more affordable, has a deeper local service network, offers stronger monitoring software, and covers the typical residential load profile without overbuying. Cummins is a good match for very large homes, mixed-use properties, or operations that want industrial-grade diesel.
