  • Portable Generators in Florida and Georgia: What They Do Well
October 20, 2025

Portable generators have a real place in a Northeast Florida or Southeast Georgia household - as long as you understand what they are and are not built to do. After years of installing whole-home standby systems, we get asked about portables almost every week. Here is the honest answer.

What Portable Generators Do Well

Portable units are purpose-built for specific use cases, and in those roles they are excellent:

  • Tailgating and outdoor events - power a TV, grill, lights, and speakers.
  • Jobsite power - run tools, compressors, and task lights on a remodel.
  • RV and camping trips - keep your campsite running off-grid.
  • Short-duration home emergencies - refrigerator plus a few lights for an outage measured in hours, not days.

A quality portable runs $800 to $4,000 depending on capacity, needs no installation, and will happily start on the first pull for ten years with basic maintenance.

Where Portables Fall Short in Florida and Georgia

Coastal Florida and Georgia do not usually suffer short outages. Hurricane-related outages run days to weeks. That is where the math on a portable flips hard:

  • Manual operation in a storm - you drag it out in the rain, run cords, and refuel every few hours.
  • Gasoline storage and availability - during evacuations, gas stations run dry first.
  • Carbon monoxide risk - portables kill people every year when placed incorrectly.
  • Cannot run central AC - a 7,500W portable does not carry a typical Florida cooling load.
  • No protection when you are gone - your fridge and sump pump go dark when you evacuate.

The GenCo Generators Recommendation

For coastal homes, a whole-home Generac Guardian or Kohler standby generator is the real answer. It runs automatically within seconds of an outage, fuels on natural gas or propane (no gasoline hoarding), carries full house loads including AC, and operates whether you are home or evacuated.

That said, if you want a portable to complement a standby (for jobsite work or tailgating), we can point you to quality brands and the right sizing. And if a portable is really what your budget and use case call for right now, we will tell you that honestly.
