  • Seasonal Generator Maintenance: What Actually Matters
October 30, 2025

Northeast Florida summers can feel like an endurance test - brutal sun, high humidity, and storms that can knock the grid out with no warning. A reliable standby generator is the answer, but only if it has been maintained. Neglect is the single most common reason a generator fails during an outage, and almost every failure we see in the field would have been caught on a routine service visit.

Routine Inspections: A Stitch in Time

Routine inspections are about spotting small issues before they become expensive ones. During an annual or bi-annual service, a GenCo Generators technician inspects the enclosure, checks battery cables and connections, examines the belts and coolant heater, looks for oil or fuel leaks, inspects fuel system hoses, cleans or replaces the air filter, and checks the AC wiring, DC electrical system, and exhaust system.

We also run a load bank test when appropriate - that is the only way to know the generator will actually perform under real load, not just idle for a few seconds on a self-test. Routine inspection is the baseline of real maintenance.

Filter Replacement: Cleanliness Is Next to Readiness

The fuel filter is the first line of defense against contamination getting into the engine. The air filter protects intake from dust and debris. Both clog over time and slowly strangle the generator without you noticing. Replacement is cheap; an engine failure from running dirty fuel is not. Filter replacement is one of the standard line items on our 33-Point Preventative Maintenance On-Site Checklist.

Electrical System Checks: Keep the Spark Alive

A standby generator is only as good as its electrical system. We check AC wiring for wear or corrosion, verify battery electrolyte levels (where applicable), and confirm every connection is tight. Loose terminals are one of the most common and most preventable causes of a no-start. Regular electrical checks keep the generator ready to fire up when the grid drops.

Full System Maintenance: Total Care

Individual checks are important, but a full-system service visit is the real gold standard. It is a top-to-bottom review - lubrication system hoses, fuel testing, control panel check, exhaust system, transfer switch contacts, every system that affects whether your generator starts and runs under load. That is what we do on every visit, and it is what keeps GenCo Generators customers out of trouble every storm season.

The GenCo Advantage: Maintenance Subscription

Why handle generator maintenance yourself when seasoned professionals can do it right, on schedule, at a known cost? Our Generator Maintenance Subscription includes the full inspection, filter replacements, electrical checks, load testing, and full-system review. Subscribers also get priority service status - when a storm drops the grid, our subscribers go to the front of the line.

Why GenCo Generators?

We eat, sleep, and breathe whole-house generators. That is not a slogan - it is literally all we do. Every one of our technicians is factory-trained on the brands we install, and our 33-Point Preventative Maintenance On-Site Checklist is the same process we run on our own units. When we say your generator is ready, it is ready.

A Proactive Approach

Preventive maintenance means fixing things before they break. Every seasonal visit is designed to spot early signs of wear, flag parts approaching end-of-life, and keep the unit in shape so you never have to find out the hard way.

Digital Tracking

Every maintenance visit gets logged with dated records of what was checked, what was replaced, and what to watch for next time. You always know where you stand.

Your Best Bet for Generator Maintenance

Your generator is an investment. Keeping it properly maintained is how you protect that investment - and how you make sure it actually runs when your neighbors are in the dark. Contact GenCo Generators or call 904-468-3770 to set up your seasonal maintenance or subscribe to our ongoing service plan. We will beat any competitor pricing or we will pay you $500.
